Now that it’s finally October, I decided to make an Autumn/Halloween screen saver for my iMac. It’s as easy as placing your favorite photos in to a folder.

Depending on your version, the iMac has a resolution up to 4096 x 2304 pixels. Most free photo websites offer free images with resolutions close to this. However, I’ve found that a 1920 x 1080 pixels image will look fine. So, I went to my favorite website, Pixabay.com, and started collecting images and saving them to a folder on my desktop. I’ve listed links to the images below. Once you’ve placed all your images in a special folder, you are ready to create your screen saver. We will do our work in the System Preferences panel.

1. To open the panel, click the System Preferences icon in the Dock.
   
   
2. Click the Desktop & Screen Saver option (see screenshot).
   
   
3. Next, click the Screen Saver button at the top (see screenshot).
   
   You will see a list of pre-designed animated screen savers on the left and a preview on the right. Each screen saver is a slideshow and has it’s own transition animation between images. The first 12 will accept our folder of images and the rest are stand-alone animations.
   
   Floating - Images slowly float upwards on to the screen
   
   Flip-up - Each image scales/flips on to the screen
   
   Reflections - Images are grouped together on the screen with a light reflective background
   
   Origami, Shifting Tiles, Sliding Panels - Images are placed in a masonry style layout and each image in the layout is replaced with another
   
   Photo Mobile, Holiday Mobile - Images hang from a string with a festive background
   
   Photo Wall - Images appear in frames on a wall
   
   Vintage Prints - Images appear in a stack of vintage styled prints
   
   Ken Burns - Images appear full screen with slight movement across the screen
   
   Classic - Images appear full screen with a fade transition
   
   
4. Click on each thumbnail on the left to preview the animation for that screen saver. Select the screen saver of your choice.
   
   Now we just need to point to our image folder. On the right under the preview, you will see a Source menu. As you can see, we have four pre-installed image collections, including National Geographic, Aerial, Cosmos and Nature Patterns.
   
   
5. Click the Choose Folder option from the menu and find your image folder. Select your folder and you should see your images in the preview window.
