Instant Pot Irish Bangers with Onion Gravy Recipe

Instant Pot Irish Bangers with Onion Gravy Recipe
Although St. Patrick’s Day in America is often celebrated with food that isn’t even Irish (corned beef actually has Jewish roots and was originally prepared by early Irish immigrants when they couldn’t get some of the meats they had previously enjoyed in Ireland), there are dozens of great Irish dishes that can be served for St. Patrick’s Day that are actually authentic. One popular dish served all over Ireland is Bangers and Mash, which uses Irish sausages. It can be made easily in the Instant Pot, and quickly, as well. Instant Pot Irish Bangers with Onion Gravy is delicious, and is made with very Irish ingredients: Irish sausages, Guinness, and potatoes.

Irish sausages (bangers) can be found in many larger grocery stores, and also membership warehouse stores such as Sam’s and Costco. If you can’t find them in your area, you can substitute your favorite sausages such as bratwurst.

6 Servings

1 teaspoon vegetable oil
6 Irish Sausages, such as Johnsonville Irish O'Garlic (19-24 ounces)

2 large onions
1 12 oz. bottle Guinness Stout
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 1/2 teaspoons granular beef bouillon

3 tablespoons cornstarch, dissolved in 1/4 cup water

Mashed Potatoes

  1. Heat the vegetable oil on the Sauté setting of the Instant Pot.
  2. Brown the sausages on each side, piercing them with a fork to release some of the juices.
  3. Remove the sausages and set aside.
  4. Add the onions to the pot and stir until they soften.
  5. Arrange the sausages over the onions.
  6. Pour the Guinness over the sausages, sprinkle with the salt and beef bouillon.
  7. Place the lid on the pot, set the valve to sealing, and set to manual for 5 minutes.
  8. When the cycle has finished, let the pressure release naturally - about 20 minutes.
  9. Stir in the cornstarch mixture and bring to a boil on the sauté setting.
  10. Taste for seasoning and serve over mashed potatoes.
