Design a Digital Planner in Affinity Designer
In this Skillshare course Design a Digital Planner with Vectors in Affinity Designer, Liz Kohler Brown teaches how to create a digital planner in Affinity Designer.
Liz begins with an introduction and instructions for how to download the course resources, which includes a copy of the finished digital planner. She gives her students a tour of the sample planner and also demonstrates how to use the iFont app to install the free font used in the course on your iPad.
Before starting to build the undated planner, Liz demonstrates how to create a sketch for the planner layout in Affinity Designer. She discusses how to create thumbnails for each page and add color swatches, using both the Designer (vector) and Pixel Personas. The Personas are one of the great features in Affinity Designer.
The next section is about vector shapes and special effects. Liz demonstrates how to draw the menu buttons and how to use the Operations commands to join simple shapes in to more complex shapes. She also demonstrates how to create gradients fills and use the Effects and Styles panels to add special effects, such as a drop shadow to the buttons. Finally, she adds the button labels using text and icons.
At this point, Liz discusses how to organize your design elements by grouping layers in the Layers panel. She creates several page layouts, such as lined, monthly, weekly and sticker pages. Once these pages are complete, she moves on to making stickers.
Liz demonstrates how she created the stickers using the vector drawing tools. Some of the stickers include sticky notes, headers, flags, word art and bullet lists. She also discusses how to use the undated planner that you just created as the foundation for a dated planner.
Once all the design elements are created in Affinity Designer, it’s time to move to Keynote. On the first page, Liz demonstrates how to add hyperlinks to the menu buttons. Next, she demonstrates how to export the pages from Keynotes as a PDF for GoodNotes. In GoodNotes, Liz demonstrates how to add the individual sticker pngs on to the sticker page.
In the last video, Liz discusses her tips for fixing common problems and her Facebook group for planner designers.
